Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) maintained their perfect start to the Ligue 1 season with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Monaco on Wednesday, though they were dealt a blow with Gianluigi Donnarumma suffering a serious facial injury.
The win extended PSG’s lead at the top to 10 points, putting them further ahead of second-placed Marseille and third-placed Monaco.
However, the match was marred by a gruesome injury to Donnarumma, who was struck in the face by the studs of Monaco defender Wilfried Singo. The Italy international required staples to treat deep lacerations on the right side of his face but continued to play until being replaced by Matvey Safonov.
Monaco took the lead in the first half after PSG’s Marquinhos was penalised for a handball, with Eliesse Ben Seghir converting the penalty. Minutes later, Breel Embolo’s goal put Monaco ahead, seemingly on course to end PSG’s remarkable 31-game unbeaten away run in Ligue 1.
However, PSG responded quickly: Ousmane Dembélé equalised before Gonçalo Ramos headed in a corner to put the visitors ahead. Dembélé sealed the win deep into stoppage time, ensuring PSG returned to the capital with all three points.
