The world celebrated World Radio Day on February 13th, 2022, as established by UNESCO during its 36th conference in November 2011. Lallah Ngwenya, News Central TV’s Zimbabwe correspondent, discussed the importance and evolution of the media instrument, on today’s e[isode of Breakfast Central with Joe Hanson and Oluchi Enobong.
According to Ngwenya, in the twenty-first century, radio has become an essential medium for information distribution in Zimbabwe, with the South African nation licensing its first six community radio stations 40 years after independence, and eight more in 2021, bringing the total to 14.
She referred to the licensing of community radio stations as a “delayed milestone,” citing “tight media controls” as the reason for the delay.
Lallah went on to say how journalists in Zimbabwe are celebrated.
