Raila Calls off Azimio Protests; Agrees to Reconciliation With Ruto

Raila Odinga, who is in charge of the coalition Azimio la Umoja One Kenya had on Sunday, called off the planned protests for Monday. He did this after President William Ruto asked for a peaceful end.

However, Odinga asked that Ruto’s idea of a bipartisan committee be set up right away, and he said that if the negotiations failed, he would start big protests again in a week.

“We agree that a balanced parliamentary process co-chaired by both sides and backed by experts from outside should proceed. In our view, this committee should be formed with immediate effect and strict deadlines for resolving the crisis facing the country.

“In light of the aforementioned, we put off our protests for Monday, but we want to emphasise that we maintain the right to organise protests if this procedure is unsuccessful. In a week, we’ll decide to start protesting again if Hon. Ruto doesn’t engage or respond to our counter-offer in a meaningful way,” he said.

Here are major points from Azimio la Umoja One Kenya’s Leader;
1. The Monday and Thursday demos that had been scheduled for next week have been cancelled by Azimio.
2. Azimio has embraced President Ruto’s offer of reconciliation.
3. Azimio retains the right to conduct demos. If no one responds, demonstrations will restart after a week, as they stressed that the freedom to protest is protected by the Kenyan constitution and demand that any arrests related to protests cease immediately.
4. Should start working with Dr. Ruto’s team to find a peaceful solution to the issues the nation is currently experiencing.
5. Restauration of the Cherera 4 IEBC commissioners.
6. High expense of living must be addressed by the government.
Government should reinstate the subsidies used under the previous administration.
