Former Prime Minister of Kenya Raila Odinga has said he will boost the North-Eastern region by turning it into a global livestock market by investing in meat factories should he clinch the Presidential seat in August.

He made this known while speaking at the United Democratic Movement congress on Thursday.

Odinga promised his government will invest extensively in fostering cattle breeds, combating drought, and buying their produce (milk and meat) to revive the country’s stunted economy at the UDM NDC, where he was approved as their presidential candidate.

He said; “Pastoralism is very important and if you look at Botswana they had depended on livestock for a very long time and their economy was in a good state. It was one of the most successful economies in the African continent.

“We shall improvise the systems in Botswana for our livestock sector to thrive. People who have thousands of livestock should not be poor. we will build slaughter houses and create ways to export them into other countries.”

Drought, floods, and poverty are among the major issues affecting inhabitants in the region, according to the ODM leader, who also stated that if elected president, he would prioritise shifting the narrative of the country’s recurring crises.
