Ramadan, the Islamic holy month, will begin on Thursday, March 23, 2023, according to announcements from Muslim authorities across the world.

The sighting of the crescent moon determined the start date for Ramadan in regions including Saudi Arabia, Africa, and the Middle East.

In Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto confirmed the first day of Ramadan as Thursday, stating that the reports of moon sightings were verified and authenticated by the states and National Moon Sighting Committee.

Muslims observe daily fasting from sunrise until sunset during Ramadan, refraining from eating, drinking, smoking, and sexual intercourse.

The fasting aims to bring Muslims closer to God and remind them of the suffering of the oppressed. Muslims are encouraged to engage in heightened religious contemplation and to refrain from negative behaviours such as gossip, fighting, or cursing.

Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and is required for all healthy Muslims, with exemptions for those who are ill, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and underaged children. The month concludes with the joyous Eid al-Fitr holiday, often marked by new clothes and gifts.
