South Africa’s re-elected President, Cyril Ramaphosa has promised to collaborate with all politicians across the political spectrum.
“I will serve all and work with even those who did not support me,” Ramaphosa told the National Assembly in Cape Town.
He was re-elected as President after the African National Congress (ANC) formed a coalition with the main opposition party and others to secure his second term.
He defeated Julius Malema, leader of the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters, in a Parliamentary vote. Ramaphosa received 283 votes, while Malema got 44 votes out of 400 members in the house.
Ramaphosa’s victory came from the coalition of the ANC, the Democratic Alliance (DA), and other parties after the ANC lost its majority two weeks ago. The ANC and DA reportedly signed an agreement just hours before the presidential vote, ensuring his position as President.
This means that both parties will co-govern South Africa, marking the first national coalition where no single party has a majority.
