South Africa President, Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday remarked that the biggest political party on the continent, the African National Congress (ANC) should have worked harder to prevent the corruption under former President, Jacob Zuma as he said he will not support what is not right.
Ramaphosa, Zuma’s former deputy, gave his rendition of the corruption allegations against current members of the ANC, in what’s rarely seen from a President.
There are allegations of graft against Zuma who has been accused of favoritism and corrupt practices during his nine-year Presidency in the country. He is accused of easing the South African economy for Gupta brothers – Atul, Ajay and Rajesh who have been accused of influencing key policies to their benefits.
Ramaphosa said the party should have done more in stopping the abuse of power and corruption that went on uncontrollably during the past administration, as it almost affected the party during local government elections.
He described the act as “corrosive corruption” which hurt the ANC during elections as they had their worst results since the end of the apartheid. He added that he would not try to defend what is obvious as opposition parties gathered at the venue of the inquiry.
Ramaphosa is also blamed for his role in enabling corruption, as he has been a key member of the ANC and one of its leaders.
The current President challenged Zuma’s wife for the leadership of the ANC in 2017 before becoming President of the country. He faces a tough battle to convince South Africans the party which is key to their history still has them at heart, as opposition parties like the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) wax stronger.
