The family of late Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei has criticised Kenyan police for failing to act quickly to protect her, despite repeated reports about threats to her safety.
Rebecca’s father, Joseph Cheptegei, confirmed in a media briefing at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Eldoret, that they had alerted the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) in Trans Nzoia County well before her tragic death. He expressed sorrow that his daughter, who was a key supporter of the family, had been killed by someone she knew.
Joseph Cheptegei mentioned a prior incident where Rebecca was followed by her ex-boyfriend while transporting personal belongings to Uganda, leading to a police report filed at Endebes Police Station in Trans Nzoia County.
He criticised the authorities for not taking prompt action, even after another complaint was lodged just days before her death. He urged the government to now take action, though it was too late to save her.
“On my side, the government agencies failed because we reported early enough on her security because this man used to follow her even up to the Uganda side, but they didn’t act swiftly. It was evident her life was in danger,” said the devastated father.
“Even last Friday we made the same complaint, but unfortunately he doused my daughter with petrol and she is dead…. the government should now act, though it is too late,” he said.
The grieving father also highlighted how Rebecca’s career had been vital to supporting their family, especially the education of her younger siblings. He expressed gratitude to the medical team that tried to save her but asked for government assistance in holding the attacker accountable.
Dr Kimani Mbugua, Head of the Theatre and Critical Care Unit, confirmed that Rebecca passed away early Thursday after severe burns caused multi-organ failure. Despite a coordinated effort from plastic surgeons, ICU doctors, nurses, and other specialists, they could not save her.
Dr Mbugua expressed condolences to Rebecca’s family and the global community, acknowledging her as an internationally recognised athlete.
Trans Nzoia Deputy County Commander, Salesio Murithi, confirmed that the family had filed a report with the DCI regarding a land dispute involving Rebecca and her ex-partner. He stated that the investigation was ongoing, and charges would be pursued after further review of the incident.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen expressed his sadness at the tragic loss of Rebecca, calling her a resilient athlete who represented Uganda and East Africa with pride. He emphasised the need to combat gender-based violence, especially within elite sports, and assured the family of the government’s commitment to ensuring justice for Rebecca.
