The Coalition for the Protection of Our Democracy (COPDEM) has urged Nigerians to unite against what it describes as the dangerous drift toward a one-party state. In a press release signed by its National Chairman, Rwang Pam Jr., COPDEM highlights the urgent need for an effective opposition to counterbalance the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Pam Jr. acknowledged the immense hardship Nigerians have endured in recent years:
“We deeply condole with families who have lost loved ones in tragic stampedes this December 2024, acts of insecurity, and during protests against worsening conditions.”
He draws attention to the tragic events of August 2024, where over 20 Nigerians, including minors, were killed during peaceful protests. He adds, “We cannot forget our children who were arrested, starved, and detained for months for being innocently caught up in the crowd in a country they look up to.”
COPDEM paints a grim picture of a nation grappling with repression, insecurity, and economic despair. The group laments the erosion of democratic freedoms, the astronomical cost of living, and the disconnect between elected officials and their constituents.
COPDEM warns that Nigeria is teetering on the edge of autocracy, citing five critical indicators:
- Mass Defections: The wave of opposition politicians defecting to the APC is creating a hollow political landscape devoid of dissenting voices.
- Repression of Dissent: Journalists, activists, and opposition figures are harassed, intimidated, and arbitrarily detained, stifling alternative perspectives.
- Brain Drain: Young professionals and entrepreneurs are fleeing the country due to economic stagnation and political instability, further weakening Nigeria’s potential.
- Economic Paralysis: A monopolised political environment breeds poor governance, policy inconsistency, and unattractive conditions for foreign investments.
- Erosion of Public Confidence: Disillusionment among the electorate threatens voter turnout and undermines the democratic process.
The Call for a Unified Opposition
COPDEM advocates for the formation of a principled, visionary opposition coalition. According to the press release, such a coalition must prioritise:
- Welfare and Security: Addressing poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and the rising cost of living.
- Ideological Integrity: Moving beyond opportunistic politics to adopt clear, actionable policies.
- Inclusivity and Accountability: Actively involving women, youth, marginalised groups, and individuals with disabilities.
- Democratic Principles: Upholding good governance, fighting corruption, and promoting transparency.
COPDEM also calls for an end to high nomination fees, which have turned elections into a financial competition, disenfranchising capable candidates.
A Path Forward
The coalition underscores the transformative potential of a robust opposition:
- Strengthened Democracy: A true opposition ensures checks and balances, fostering accountability and better governance.
- Policy Innovation: Healthy competition drives creative solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
- Economic Growth: Restored investor confidence can attract foreign investments and stimulate local industries.
- National Unity: Transparent and inclusive politics can rebuild trust and unite Nigerians in addressing common challenges.
A New Year, A New Resolve
As 2025 dawns, COPDEM renews its commitment to defending Nigeria’s democracy and advocating for good governance. “The time for action is now,” the statement declares, urging Nigerians to unite in ensuring that the 2027 elections reflect the true will of the people, free from the shadows of autocracy.
This is a clarion call not just for opposition politicians but for all Nigerians who believe in the ideals of democracy. Together, COPDEM insists, the nation can chart a new course toward justice, equity, and shared prosperity.
