Madagascar has faced years of devastating droughts which has left hundreds of thousands of people facing starvation –turning to largely inedible plants for food.

Currently, the country has been hit by the devastating effects of five recent natural disasters related to flooding and destruction by cyclones, leaving them in a particularly desperate situation.

The Red Cross Society of Seychelles, in a bid to reach out more to the people in need, has put out a notice urging everyone in Seychelles and beyond, to donate food items to support the people of Madagascar.

Until now, the society was accepting only cash contributions due to the high cost of transporting food items. However, with the help of the Seychelles Defence Force (SDF), donations, including food items are now being accepted.

In a recent report, the chaplain of the defence forces, Deacon Louis Agathine, said the delivery of donated goods will now be possible as the Seychelles Coast Guard will leave on a ship for a mission to the region next month.

“As we have a mission to carry out soon, we have been asked by the Commander in Chief, President Wavel Ramkalawan, to use this opportunity to assist Madagascar and kill two birds with one stone,” added Agathine.
