The Nigerian government has declared that 12 new skills and disciplines will be added to the basic school curriculum, including hairstyling, plumbing, GSM repair, and makeup.
This development follows continuing economic reforms in several areas.
The new trades were incorporated into the Basic Education curriculum to improve students’ employability and practical skills, according to a statement released by the National Orientation Agency (NOA).
Plumbing, floor and tile work, POP installation, event management and decoration, bakery and confections, hairstyling, makeup, interior design, GSM repairs, and satellite/TV antenna installation are among the new subjects.
Additional subjects include the installation and upkeep of CCTV and intercom systems, solar power systems, clothing manufacturing, agriculture and processing (including crop production, beekeeping, horticulture, and livestock farming, such as raising chickens and rabbits), and basic digital literacy (including robotics and IT).
According to the statement, primary and junior secondary students nationwide will begin taking the new subjects in January 2025.
