Speaker Raymond Dlamini is expected to make a pronouncement after attempts to elect a new mayor for the City of Ekurhuleni on Wednesday failed.
The proceedings were stopped earlier on Wednesday, with the African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) holding deliberations at the sidelines in an attempt to find one another.
The ANC was expected to back the EFF’s provincial chair Nkululeko Dunga to become the new mayor of Ekurhuleni. However, both have not been able to reach a compromise.
While ANC regional chair and former mayor Mzwandile Masina pulled out of the race, seeing as some members of the ANC refused to back an EFF takeover of the city.
Last week, Tania Campbell was voted out as mayor through an African National Congress (ANC)-led motion of no confidence.
A mayoral election needed to take place within seven days, in accordance with council regulations.
