A report by Kenya’s Public Service Commission has revealed deep corruption in the country’s civil service with at least Sh.227m ($1.98m) stolen by workers.
The report showed that the money was stolen across 20 public institutions in the country.
The commission also stated in the report that of the money stolen, only a paltry Sh1.71m($15,000) was recovered, a proof of the sophistication of the criminality.
There was a reduction in the number of public institutions with cases of corruption from 47 in the 2019/20 Financial Year to 20 in the last financial year. Cases reported also fell drastically from 427 to 188.
The number of convicted civil servants however rose from eight to twelve in 2020/21 financial year.
“The number of cases prosecuted in court improved from 132 in 2019/2020 to 146 in 2020/2021 while the cases referred for administrative action declined from 222 in 2019/2020 to 66 in the financial year 2020/2021,” the report read.

The commission for ethics and anti-corruption in Kenya (EACC) had listed 20 public officials for prosecution, as they were caught in various atrocities. The officials were found to have abused office, stolen public funds and took bribes. One of them was a Principal Secretary at the State Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, who was accused of irregular procurements in a project sanctioned by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
There were also other revelations from the report with KSh2.3billion reportedly stolen by a former regional manager at the country’s rural roads agency.
