Reports say, Madonna Biopic Starring Julia Garner No Longer Moving Forward
The movie telling Madonna’s life story — which is written, produced and directed by the pop star — is reportedly no longer happening at Universal Pictures anymore.
Variety had reported on Tuesday, citing multiple sources, that the biopic co-written, produced and directed by the 64 years old legendary pop star herself, will not be moving forward in development at Universal Pictures. According to the report, Madonna still has intentions to create a movie about her life in the future but will prefer to focus on her new announced The Celebration Tour for now.
Back In June, a source had confirmed to PEOPLE that the Madonna film project was in “active development” and Ozark Emmy winner Julia Garner was the “choice to play Madonna in the biopic.”
The 28 year old actress, Julia Garner, would have potentially co-starred Uncut Gems actress, Julia Fox, who was said to be in talks to play the role of the singer’s longtime friend Debi Mazar. Mazar is an actress known for Empire Records and Goodfellas plus TV’s Younger.
We recall that Madonna announced back in October 2021 that she was nearly done writing the script.
“Grateful for the success of Madame ❌, that my script is almost finished, and for the support of my beautiful children!” the mother of six captioned a bunch of selfies on instagram at the time displaying her sitting in front of her already typed screenplay.
Way back in September 2020 when the biopic was first confirmed, Madonna said in a statement, “I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer — a human being, trying to make her way in this world. The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me.”
“It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision,” she said at the time.
