Residents Displaced as Massive Flood Hits N'Djamena (News Central TV)

Several inhabitants of N’Djamena, the Chadian capital have abandoned their homes following massive flooding that has hit since Thursday, leaving parts of the city navigable only by boat.

Some flood victims left their homes on foot, carrying little possessions on their heads. Women built an emergency camp out of thin wooden branches and cloth to provide shelter for their families.

Floods are regular during the central African country’s rainy season, which usually runs from May to October in its southern axis. This year’s rains came early, quickly overwhelming drainage channels and waterways in one of the heaviest in decades.

According to the International Organisation for Migration “9,103 households, consisting of 44,839 individuals, were affected by the floods”
