Residents Evacuated as Gully Erosion Threatens Buildings in Aba

Gully Erosion

Many residents of Ovom Street in Aba, Abia State, have either been relocated by the Abia State government or fled themselves as gully erosion has worsened in the vicinity.

Gully erosion, which began in small proportions years ago, has now divided the road, led to the collapse of several structures, and destroyed other real estate in the vicinity.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has described the situation as regrettable. He said if not controlled quickly, the erosion will affect the entire vicinity including the road where his administration is currently carrying out a project.

Otti has instructed the General Manager of Greater Aba Development Agency (GADA), Mr Uche Ukeje, to solve the problem within a few weeks.
He assured the populace that engineers and contractors with expertise will be deployed.
Addressing the residents affected by the gully erosion, Otti clarified that he had instructed GADA to evacuate residents in that vicinity.

“I had asked him to evacuate everybody that is living around here.
“So, if you look around these houses, there is nobody in there. Those who are very close here, I had already gotten them evacuated.
“So, I hope nobody goes back to some of these buildings because it’s very dangerous”, he stated.
