Rishi Sunak has resigned from his role as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK), as well as Conservative Party leader after a major defeat to Labour in the country’s recent general election.

“I have given this job my all. But you have sent a clear message, and yours is the only judgement that matters.

“This is a difficult day, but I leave this job honoured to have been Prime Minister of the best country in the world,” he said on X.

Sunak stated he would step down once a leadership race begins.

News Central reports that the Conservatives faced a historic loss, with many seats turning to Labour. Sir Keir Starmer claimed victory early on Friday.

Sunak called the night “sobering” and congratulated Starmer on his win. He acknowledged the voters’ clear message and took responsibility for the loss.

“The Labour Party has won this general election and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory.

“The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight, there is much to learn… and I take responsibility for the loss,” he said.

Addressing his party, he expressed regret over the defeat of many Tory MPs and appreciated them for their service.

“I am sorry.”

“It pains me to think how many good colleagues who contributed so much to their communities and our country will now no longer sit in the House of Commons. I thank them for their hard work and their service,” the now former PM said.

Sunak also reflected on his achievements as leader, citing improvements in inflation, mortgage rates, economic growth, and international relations. He also mentioned the strengthening of the UK’s union and expressed pride in his leadership.
