Ethiopia’s Warring Factions Commence Peace Talks

In a bid to find a lasting solution to the stalemate from civil war that has raged on for two years, Ethiopia’s warring parties are set to start talks today.

The African Union sponsored talks which is holding in South Africa will host representatives from the government and rebel forces from the besieged northern region of Tigray.

Fighting returned to the region in August, causing a five-month truce to collapse.

The violence has escalated in Tigray with government troops and their Eritrean allies controlling key areas deep in the region.

The war has had devastating effects with thousands believed to have been killed, while millions have been internally displaced, and left without food and access to water.

War crimes have been alleged and atrocities reported.

Tigrayan forces said their delegation had arrived in South Africa and their priorities include immediate cessation of hostilities, resumption of humanitarian aid and the withdrawal of Eritrean troops.
The international community has maintained the same stance.

The government said it is committed to peace but vowed to continue with an offensive to control airports in the region and rid it from armed groups.

The talks have raised hope for a country that has been enmeshed in protracted infighting.
