Rivers Community Disrupts Activities at NLNG Headquarters

Business operations at the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Headquarters in Port Harcourt were disrupted on Monday as members of the Amadi-Ama community staged a protest over the death of a community member, Precious Imabibo.

The protest was in response to the January 20, 2024, drowning of Imabibo, which the community attributes to the reckless operation of an NLNG boat. Among the demonstrators were fishermen, widows, and members of Imabibo’s family, all demanding justice and compensation for the tragic loss.

The victim’s father, Mr. Ipalibo, expressed his frustration with NLNG’s lack of empathy, accusing the company of ignoring the community’s plight. Other protesters echoed his concerns, stating that this incident is not an isolated one, but part of a pattern of negligence.

In response, NLNG’s General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development, Andy Odeh, acknowledged the protest in a statement. He assured that the company is actively engaging with relevant stakeholders to resolve the matter peacefully. Odeh also emphasized NLNG’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its people and host communities, urging calm as the Nigerian Police continue their investigation into the incident.

This marks the second protest by the victim’s family, who have vowed to continue their demonstrations until justice is served.
