Rhonex Kipruto has been stripped of his 10-kilometre road race world record and banned for six years after the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said on Wednesday it found him guilty of doping. He will also lose his world championship bronze medal.
The 24-year-old set the 10km road race world record in Valencia in 2020 and won the 10,000 meters at the 2019 Stockholm Diamond League. However, these results will now be annulled.
The Kenyan had been provisionally suspended for an anti-doping violation in May last year, but will now be banned till May 2029.
A disciplinary tribunal determined that Kipruto’s Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) showed irregularities, indicating potential doping.
While he denied the Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) charge, the panel said it was “comfortably satisfied” that the Kenyan was involved in a “deliberate and sophisticated doping regime over a long period”.
Kipruto can still appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
