Roadside Bomb Kills 10 Kenyan Soldiers in Southern Somalia

At least ten Kenyan soldiers have been killed by a roadside bomb in southern Somalia.

The incident occurred in the Gedo region, near the Kenya-Somalia border, where their vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device.

One former Kenyan presidential aspirant said that his younger brother was among the dead, but the names of the soldiers have not been revealed.

An attack carried out by the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab group has been blamed for similar attacks against civilians and security forces convoys in the past.

The soldiers killed were members of the African Union Mission in Somalia – a peacekeeping force in the country to assist the federal government in the fight against al-Shabab militants.

Recently, there has been an increase in militant attacks targeting public areas, government installations, and security checkpoints.

The attacks occurred as the country was preparing to hold parliamentary elections, which culminated in MPs selecting a new president. Analysts say the attacks were meant to scuttle the election process.
