Australian actress Margot Robbie chose to slap Leonardo DiCaprio at her “Wolf of Wall Street” audition rather than kissing him, according to the “Barbie” star.
During a recent episode of the “Talking Pictures” podcast, she joked that hitting her scene partner could be considered assault and result in arrest.
Fortunately, Robbie claimed, DiCaprio and the film’s director Martin Scorsese loved it, and she walked out of that audition not only with the job but also with her shackles removed.
“It was not in the script,” Robbie claimed of the slap, alluding to the “throwing the water in the face” scene she read with DiCaprio during her audition.
Robbie revealed that after improvising, DiCaprio “returned to the script and the last line was ‘come over here and kiss me.'”
“In my brain, I was thinking, I could completely kiss Leonardo DiCaprio right now. That would be great. I can’t wait to tell all my friends about it,” Robbie recalled. “And then I was like, ‘Nah.’ I just walloped him in the face,” she continued, laughing.
According to Robbie, it was dead silent for what she described as an eternity until Scorsese and DiCaprio “burst out laughing” and validated her by exclaiming, “That was great!”
Still, Robbie admitted, terror set in.
She thought to herself, “You’re going to get arrested.” I’m quite confident this is assault or battery. You will not only never work again, but you will also face jail time for this.”
Robbie played DiCaprio’s wife in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” which turned out to be her big break when it opened in theatres in 2013. It also received five Academy Award nominations at the time.
Needless to say, Robbie never went to prison for slapping DiCaprio. Instead, she pursued a successful career in Hollywood as an Oscar-nominated actor and producer.
