Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has recalled attacker, Odion Ighalo from retirement more than a year after he quit the national team.
A team list of 24 players was released on Monday with Ighalo being the biggest news. President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick had hinted on the invitation of the former Manchester United attacker in a post on his Instagram account.
Ighalo scored 16 goals in 35 games for the Nigerian senior national team and won the top scorer award at the 2019 African Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt as Nigeria went on to pick a bronze medal. He had been roundly criticised by Super Eagles supporters after an underwhelming World Cup, before bouncing back to silence his critics at the AFCON.
His recall has come as a surprise to many Super Eagles followers who opined that they’d have rather a callup be given to Emmanuel Dennis or Taiwo Awoniyi – two attackers who are in a rich vein of form in top European leagues.
The list for the World Cup qualifying fixture against Liberia also sees Wilfred Ndidi’s recall after a bout with injury. FC Porto’s Zaidu Sanusi is also back in the squad after he was snubbed in the last round of invitations.
Other regular suspects have made the cut for the upcoming international games.
