Russia’s military has announced that its forces had seized control of another village in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, where Moscow has intensified its offensive recently.
The Russian defence ministry reported via Telegram that troops had taken Novomykolaivka, a settlement approximately four kilometres (two miles) from the Ukraine-Russia border.
This advance by Russian forces comes amid stalled peace negotiations, with Moscow rejecting the unconditional ceasefire demanded by Kyiv and its European partners.
Ukraine has dismissed Russia’s calls as mere “ultimatums.”
Early in its 2022 invasion, Russia attempted to capture Sumy, the regional capital, but was repelled during a Ukrainian counteroffensive later that year.

In 2024, Kyiv launched its armed incursion into Russia’s western Kursk region from the Sumy area.
After reclaiming territory in Kursk earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered renewed military advances across the border to push back Ukrainian forces.
Sumy is not among the five Ukrainian regions that Russia claims to have formally annexed.
In a related update, Russia’s defence ministry also reported capturing the settlement of Dovgenke in the Kharkiv region on Wednesday.
