Russia Expands Reach in Africa with Congo Fuel Pipeline

Russia has tentatively agreed to construct a fuel pipeline in the Republic of Congo. According to Reuters, the pipeline will connect the western port of Pointe-Noire to the capital of Brazzaville.

According to a government decree, a partnership will be formed for the construction of the pipeline, with Russia having 90% ownership in the entity.

A concession agreement will specify the specifics, including technical and economic details. Russia has committed to providing funding, equipment, and personnel for the construction of the pipeline in the Republic of Congo, as well as fuel if necessary. In exchange, the Republic of Congo is anticipated to offer various tax relief measures.

This initiative is part of Russia’s effort to bolster its relationship with African countries, especially after its ties with Western countries slacked due to the conflict it has with Ukraine that began in February 2022.

In April, Russian military trainers were deployed to Niger to train Nigerien soldiers and create an air defence system in the country.
Also, Russia is expanding its influence in Burkina Faso by increasing its military presence in the West African state.
In May, the Central African nations of São Tomé and Príncipe entered a military partnership with Russia.
