Acceding to pressure after series of protests, President William Ruto has decided not to sign the 2024 Finance Bill to law.
It follows yesterday’s deadly demonstrations that saw protesters breach Parliament for the first time in the country’s history.
His decision to decline assent and return the bill to Parliament will be seen as an attempt to de-escalate the situation, with protesters threatening to return to the streets on Thursday.
The president said the people have spoken. “I have conceded and because we have gotten rid of it, we need to have a conversation as a nation,” he said.
