Kwanza Alliance members have hit out at President Uhuru Kenyatta over how he handled the 59th Madaraka Day celebrations.
With elections just over two months away, every move is being sniffed with a political intention.
Kenyatta, for the entire day was accused of snubbing his Deputy and Presidential candidate of the Kwanza Alliance, William Ruto.
Ruto and Kenyatta’s relationship has soured over the years as they chased different ambitions.
Kenyatta’s long-term opponent Raila Odinga has become his new associate with Ruto pushing for a surprise at the polls.
Kwanza Alliance members accused Kenyatta of abuse of authority and showing he’s one-sided in the Kenyan political discourse.
While Ruto didn’t criticise the situation in a manner his supporters and allies preferred, they went for the jugular and stated it as they felt.
One of the party leaders, Moses Wetangula said Kenyatta turned the Madaraka Day to an Azimio campaign tool.
“Mr President, you said you are on your way home and I believed you meant what you said. But what I witnessed at Uhuru Gardens was abuse of authority, a terrible show and a bloat to the integrity and image of our country. You turned a hallowed national day into Azimio campaign tool,” said Wetang’ula.
“A visitor from West Africa knows Kenya has a deputy president yet our president does not know he has a deputy,” said the senator.
He said the Kwanza will not disrespect the office of the President as it expects to go around its activities in a peaceful manner.
“We will not embarrass or humiliate anyone or treat leaders without dignity because that is below what we expect of a nation,”
“Mr President, I also listened to you carefully and I can only conclude that you don’t live in Kenya because all the things you said are not what Kenyans know or approve of. Coming Madaraka Days will be public holidays of dignity and telling Kenyans the truth,”
According to Kenya’s national daily, Nation, a Member of Parliament, Ndindi Nyoro said;
“We saw how you mistreated at your deputy at Uhuru Gardens. But this is your last day doing that. He will get his chance come August.
“We know you are setting the stage for your project to reject results come August through your NIS opinion polls. You are trying to lay grounds for him but we want to tell you that there will be no handshake once we defeat him. We will also not entertain any violence but take him to Bondo on a wheelbarrow.”
