Rwanda Recalls Kenyan Antifungal Drug Due to Safety Concerns

Rwanda’s health authorities have initiated a recall of batches of antifungal tablets from Kenya, citing safety concerns. The Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (RFDA) issued a statement instructing importers to return all Fluconazole 200mg tablets manufactured by a Kenyan company.

The directive also mandates retailers and health facilities to cease distribution and return the drugs to suppliers.

The recall was prompted by an earlier notification from the RFDA, which had alerted the Kenyan manufacturer about discolouration observed in the tablets. According to the RFDA, four bulk batches of pink Fluconazole 200mg tablets, imported into Rwanda, displayed white discolouration shortly after being placed on the shelf.

The agency confirmed that some of the affected tablet batches had entered the Rwandan market. Health officials in Rwanda plan to investigate the potential adverse effects the drug may have had on individuals who used it.

As of now, Kenyan authorities have not indicated whether the antifungal drug, commonly used to treat fungal or yeast infections, will also undergo a recall from the local market.
