Gianni Infantino, the head of FIFA, was present for the inaugural ceremony of a renovated stadium in the Rwanda’s capital that has been renamed Pele in memory of the late Brazilian football icon.
Originally known as Kigali Regional Stadium, the 22,000-seat venue now goes by the name Kigali Pele Stadium.
President Paul Kagame oversaw the ceremony, which took place on Wednesday in Kigali, the city of Rwanda, as part of the 73rd Fifa Congress.
According to The News Times, the 67-year-old leader, who is an ardent supporter of English Premier League team Arsenal, thanked Mr. Infantino for providing the nation a chance to honor Pele.
He is reported to have said that the football star, who is regarded as the best player ever, brought the world together through sports and inspired a lot of people.
The stadium’s renaming, according to Mr. Infantino, is the best method to preserve Pele’s legacy in football.
Pele passed away, but he is always with us, said Mr. Infantino.
