The Rwandan borders opened Monday to ordinary citizens from Uganda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo after having been closed for two years.
The Rwandan authorities said the decision to reopen the border is based on progress in fighting Coronavirus.
Citizens now have the freedom to travel between countries and visit family as well as transport goods.
The only exception is Burundi, which has not responded to the gesture and keeps its border closed with Rwanda.
The Burundian authorities claim that the only obstacle remaining is the matter of the alleged perpetrators of the coup attempt in Burundi in 2015.
As a condition for normal relations to resume, Burundi demands that the exiled suspects, currently living in Rwanda, be handed over.
Justice ministers from the two countries met in Kigali last week, but no progress was reported.
