Rwanda Welcomes Second Wave of Asylum Seekers Within a Week

Rwanda receives second group of asylum seekers in a week

Rwanda has received a group of 57 Eritrean and 35 Sudanese asylum seekers, following the arrival of 91 refugees and asylum seekers from Libya just days prior.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, the 183 refugees and asylum seekers will remain in Rwanda while their resettlement applications are processed.

This influx is part of a larger programme supported by the UN Refugee Agency, African Union, and European Union.

Since 2019, over 2,200 refugees and asylum seekers from Libya have been transferred to Rwanda through this programme, with more than 1,600 resettled in the US and various European countries.

The recent arrivals coincide with the UK’s efforts to enact legislation allowing for the potential transfer of asylum seekers to Rwanda, a move previously deemed unlawful by the UK Supreme Court.
