In a significant reorganisation, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda named new military and intelligence chiefs.
Maj Gen Albert Murasira, who had held the position since 2018, was replaced as defense minister by Juvénal Marizamunda, who was chosen by the president.
Lt Gen Mubarakh Muganga, a new army commander, will succeed Gen Jean Bosco Kazura, who has led the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) since November 2019.
A simultaneous firing of the army chief and the minister of defence is unusual in Rwanda.
The reorganisation has not been given a rationale. Kagame would occasionally make public allusions to the cause of prior adjustments to the military’s highest ranks.
Kagame also named a new army chief of staff (land forces) and head of military intelligence during the Monday night reorganisation.
He also replaced the top commanders of the Rwandan army fighting terrorist in Mozambique.
