Rwanda’s second electric cable manufacturing plant is set to begin operations next month. The Rwf5 billion electric cable factory located in Nyanza District, Southern Province was constructed by Mark Cables Company.
The Vice Mayor in charge of economic development in Nyanza,Patrick Kajyambere, said the plant which will hire between 1,000-1,500 workers has a capacity to manufacture 5,000 kilometres of cables per year to cater for local and regional markets.
“There are more jobs to be created along the supply chain. Those who will come to transport the products will create business opportunities for those who want to invest in restaurants, accommodation and others,” he said.
Similarly, the district is set to get a Rwf1.2 billion tile manufacturing factory, Agakiriro expected to commence operations in December. The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) estimates Rwanda’s annual cable imports at $30million.
The first cable plant by Alpha Cables started to manufacture cables in the Kigali Special Economic Zone in 2018 with the capacity to produce more than 600 tonnes of cables annually. The company produces 1,000km of multi-core copper cables every month. The cable factory in Southern province becomes the second cable factory in Rwanda.
