World number one Aryna Sabalenka seeks a historic third consecutive Australian Open title but faces strong opposition from Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and last year’s runner-up, Zheng Qinwen.
Sabalenka began her 2025 season with a victory at the Brisbane International, solidifying her position as the favourite. Meanwhile, in Sydney, Gauff delivered a stunning performance, defeating Swiatek in the United Cup final. Gauff, who ended 2024 with victories at the WTA 1000 in Beijing and the WTA Finals, exudes confidence as she heads to Melbourne, bolstered by her 2023 US Open win.
Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam champion, also started strong with four straight singles wins before losing to Gauff. Although she struggled at Melbourne Park in previous years, Swiatek downplayed concerns about her fitness, stating, “It’s all good.”
After an exceptional 2024 season that included seven finals, four titles, and reclaiming the world number one ranking, Sabalenka is poised for another dominant run. “Mentally, physically, I’ll be ready,” she declared after her Brisbane triumph.
However, Sabalenka isn’t the only threat. China’s Zheng Qinwen, fresh off an Olympic gold win, and Naomi Osaka, coached by Patrick Mouratoglou, are also contenders. While Osaka pulled out of the Auckland final due to a minor injury, she remains a dangerous unseeded player.
Teen sensation Mirra Andreeva, who reached the Roland Garros semi-finals last year, is another rising star. Despite losing to Sabalenka in Brisbane, she showed promise.
Former Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova, however, will miss the tournament due to a back injury.
