Sadio Mane was injured in the record champions’ penultimate Bundesliga match of 2022 on November 8th.

The 30-year-old was still named to Senegal’s World Cup team in the expectation that he would be fit for the latter rounds of the groups, but he ultimately missed the tournament after additional testing confirmed that surgery was required.

Sadio Mane was able to finish his first jogging session with decreased body weight at Bayern’s performance center on January 10 after a successful procedure to repair a tendon in the head of his right fibula.

There is presently no set timetable for Mane’s return, however the initial diagnosis was 10-12 weeks.

The former Liverpool attacker had made an impressive start to his Bayern Munich career, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists in his first 23 competitive outings. The Supercup and a mouth-watering match against DFB Cup winners RB Leipzig would be the 30-year-old’s first competitive test in Bayern colors. The reigning Bundesliga champions went on to win 5-3, with Mane converting a Serge Gnabry pass to put them up 2-0.

Soon after joining the club, Sadio Mane was voted 2022 African Player of the Year, and he placed second to Karim Benzema in the 2022 Ballon d’Or poll, while also winning the inaugural Socrates Award for charity work in his birthplace.

On January 20, Bayern will continue their Bundesliga title defense at RB Leipzig. They also have a UEFA Champions League last-16 encounter against Paris Saint-Germain and a DFB Cup last-16 match against Bundesliga rivals Mainz to look forward to.
