Mohamed Salah has condemned sections of Liverpool’s fanbase for booing Trent Alexander-Arnold during his first appearance since announcing his departure from the club, describing their reaction as “harsh” and undeserved.
Alexander-Arnold, who is widely expected to join Real Madrid when his contract expires in June, was jeered by some fans at Anfield as he came off the bench during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Sunday.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, Salah expressed disappointment at the reaction from the stands. The Egyptian forward called on supporters to show more appreciation for a player who has dedicated nearly two decades to the club.
“I was surprised because this is not how we act as Liverpool fans,” said Salah. “I think somehow the fans were being harsh with him. He didn’t deserve it. He gave it all to the fans.”

Alexander-Arnold, 26, has been a key figure at Liverpool since making his senior debut in 2016. A product of the club’s academy, he has gone on to make 353 appearances and win every major domestic and European title available, including two Premier League trophies and the Champions League.
Salah, who earlier this season committed to a two-year contract extension himself after his own lengthy speculation, urged fans to give Alexander-Arnold the respectful send-off he deserves in Liverpool’s final two games—against Brighton on Monday and Crystal Palace on May 25.
“Imagine someone who gives you his all for 20 years. It shouldn’t be like this,” he said. “I hope that will change in the next game because he deserves a proper farewell.”
The Liverpool-born defender has long been a fan favourite for his contributions and local roots, and Salah suggested the decision to leave was a personal one, shaped by Alexander-Arnold’s need for a fresh challenge after a hugely successful spell.
“I told him yesterday, don’t give me eye contact in your farewell. I really love him,” said Salah. “He’s done a lot for the city and for the club. He’s one of the best players in the club’s history.”
“He’s 25, 26 years old and has won it all, two or three times over. What more can he do? He needed a new challenge.”
Liverpool will hope to send Alexander-Arnold off in style as they wrap up a season that has seen them regain the Premier League crown and prepare for a summer of transition.
