Liverpool moved nine points clear at the top of the Premier League with a commanding 2-0 win over Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday. Cody Gakpo’s early strike and Mohamed Salah’s second-half penalty secured the victory, as City suffered their seventh consecutive match without a win.
Gakpo opened the scoring in the 12th minute, capitalising on Liverpool’s dominance in the first half. City barely threatened in the opening stages, with goalkeeper Stefan Ortega forced into several key saves. The Reds could have been further ahead, with Virgil van Dijk hitting the post and other chances spurned.
After a shaky start, City showed brief signs of improvement but were caught out again when Luis Diaz won a penalty after a tackle by Ortega. Salah made no mistake from the spot, sealing his 13th goal of the season and giving Liverpool their 18th win in 20 matches under manager Arne Slot.
City, struggling without their usual form, failed to mount a serious challenge, and despite introducing several key players off the bench, including Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish, they couldn’t find a way past Liverpool’s defence.
With the defeat, City now find themselves 11 points behind Liverpool in fifth place and in danger of losing their Premier League title after an unprecedented four consecutive title wins.
