With a goal from Mohamed Salah, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team bounces back from their loss to Leeds and beats Napoli in the UEFA Champions League, ending Napoli’s unbeaten streak.
No one was surprised that the team from Anfield could not pull out the four-goal win they required to win the group. A scoreless draw and a good showing would have been acceptable, but we’ll take the two goals and the victory.
First James Milner went down with an injury, and then Leo Ostigard’s first-half opening was called out for offside after a lengthy video review.
Until Jurgen Klopp subbed in Darwin Nunez, the match was going nowhere. As a substitute, Nunez performed wonderfully. After Meret made an early save from the Uruguayan with a header, the ball fell to Mohammed Salah, who poked it home for Liverpool’s first goal. Salah now has 41 European goals for the Reds, tying the record held by Steven Gerrard.
The victory was sealed when Nunez scored a goal quite identical to the first. When Meret couldn’t keep out Van Dijk’s header, Nunez scored on a tap-in.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen was kept quiet throughout the match as the striker struggled to get past Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk. Liverpool finished Group A with 15 points, going undefeated after their opening-day loss in Naples. In spite of the win, Liverpool ended up second in the group.
