Four-time African footballer of the year and arguably the greatest attacker to come out of the continent, Samuel Etoo has signified interest in the Cameroon Football Association (FECAFOOT) Presidency.
Etoo made this announcement on Wednesday, as he eyes the seat vacated by Seidou Mbombo Njoya, who was ousted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The former Barcelona and Inter Milan attacker had been identified as one of Njoya’s strongest supporters, but has chosen to vie for the seat in December’s election. Etoo said his passion for the game is bringing him back into the administrative part of the game.
“I am honored and pleased to announce my candidacy for the Presidency of the Cameroon Football Federation. After careful considerations, I have decided to take this initiative out of love for Cameroon and passion for our football,” Eto’o said on social media.
“It would be an honor to be at the service of the establishment that has bestowed upon me all the accolades I’ve received so far.
“Waiting is not an option. It is time to rebuild our football. We can no longer delay the revamping of our number one sport because the rest of the world is moving on; it is progressing without us.”
The all-time top scorer for Cameroon sad in his announcement that there must be reward for the efforts of Cameroon’s 82-year old President, Paul Biya.
Etoo promised reforms and a hospitable hosting of the 2022 AFCON slated for January.
Recall that the man who was often compared with Etoo in his heydays, Didier Drogba lost out in his bid to become the Ivorian FA boss in 2020.
