Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic has praised the outstanding performance of winger Jadon Sancho in his team’s 1-0 Champions League semi-final first-leg victory over Paris Saint-Germain, attributing it to the “big stage.”
“He’s shown that really often in training. It’s maybe not so easy to bring it onto the field, especially when you haven’t had rhythm for a while. We know his quality, and we saw it again today. We knew we needed a performance like that from Jadon,” Terzic commented.
Sancho, aware that it’s only halftime in the tie, emphasised the importance of finishing the job in Paris as Dortmund aims to secure a spot in the Champions League final at Wembley in June.
“It’s not over. We’ve still got to go to Paris and get the job done there,” said Sancho.
Throughout the match, Sancho posed a constant threat on all flanks and through the middle, showcasing the skills that led to his high-profile transfer from Dortmund to Manchester United in 2021. His dribbling ability troubled the PSG defence, and he provided a brilliant late chance with a well-placed pass to Julian Brandt, although Dortmund was denied by resilient defending from Marquinhos.
Sancho has credited Dortmund’s passionate 80,000-strong crowd for their support, stating, “Week in week out, that’s how it is. It helps us a lot. When we hear our fans, we’re so motivated from the start, so we just can’t wait to play.”
Looking ahead to the next leg at the Parc des Princes, Sancho expressed his desire to maintain his performance level, saying, “Hopefully, I can carry on. I take it game-by-game. Performances like today, I hope they just carry on.”
Sancho, who joined Dortmund on a six-month loan in January after being sidelined from the Manchester United first team by manager Erik ten Hag, has found his form revitalised. Despite his uncertain future, Sancho remains focused on the present.
“I don’t know. I’m just focused on the present right now,” he said when asked about a potential return to Manchester United.
