Schools across Mozambique’s capital have been ordered to shut their doors for a week due to extensive flooding caused by heavy rains. The closures extend to both public and private educational institutions in Maputo. Amidst the flood, the city authorities have designated eighteen shelters to accommodate those displaced, albeit with limited capacity, catering to only a fraction of the affected population.
Maputo Municipal Council reports a staggering figure of nearly 43,000 individuals impacted.
“We are providing food assistance, buckets, blankets, mats and we are also providing assistance, in coordination with the relief agency, INGD, in providing tents and a little of what they need,” states local councillor Anabela Inguane.
Tragically, the flood has claimed the lives of at least two individuals since its onset on Sunday.
