Founded in 2007 by Chimezie Emewulu (Group CEO) and Chibuzor Onwurah, Seamfix is now receiving its first institutional investment of $4.5 million from Alitheia IDF for pan-African identity management solution.
This funding will support the company’s expansion into South Africa, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia.
More than 850 million people worldwide lack proper identification, hampering their access to financial services, government aid, and job opportunities.
In sub-Saharan Africa, where the majority of these individuals reside, Seamfix plays a crucial role by offering identity creation, verification, and transaction accreditation solutions to large organisations and government agencies.
Emewulu and Onwurah, who initially collaborated during their time at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, embarked on various projects before establishing Seamfix.
Their early work included developing an online testing platform for Nigerian universities, which later inspired their identity verification solutions.
Through partnerships with entities like the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and major telecom providers such as Airtel and MTN Nigeria, Seamfix has established itself as a leader in identity verification services.
Their clientele includes renowned companies like Interswitch, Glo, United Bank for Africa, and Union Bank, with a growing presence across Africa.
Emewulu emphasises Seamfix’s pan-African vision, which aims to consolidate identity databases into a unified API platform for streamlined Know Your Customer (KYC) processes.
This initiative not only fosters trust in transactions but also promotes economic growth and inclusivity across the continent.
“We are now at a point where our focus is no longer just Nigeria.
“Our focus is Africa; we want to aggregate all 54 countries in Africa; we want to get all the identity databases aggregated on one common API platform.
“What we are doing now is enabling a pan-African KYC switch that involves identity verification, background checks, and so many other services like that,” Emewulu explains.
Alitheia IDF’s investment reflects the crucial role of digital IDs in unlocking economic potential, especially for women and marginalised communities.
Tokunboh Ishmael, Principal Partner at Alitheia IDF, acknowledged the transformative impact of Seamfix’s identification services in empowering businesses and individuals across Africa by unlocking 70% of a country’s economic potential.
Ishmael and Frank Atube, Seamfix’s Chief Operating Officer, will join the Seamfix board to further drive these impactful initiatives forward.
