After terminating his employment at Chamois Niortais, Sebastien Desabre has been named the new head coach of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The 46-year-old replaces Hector Cuper of Argentina, who was fired in June after the Leopards dropped their first two games in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying round.

Desabre was appointed as the coach of the DR Congo on Saturday, and Chamois Niortais had threatened legal action following the announcement. Chamois Niortais said it had “never been in contact” with the football association of the nation of Central Africa (Fecofa).

However, the French Ligue 2 team revealed on Sunday that Desabre’s contract would be terminated.

“I am very happy to announce that I am the new coach of DR Congo,” Tweeted Desabre.

“I thank the management of Chamois Niortais, the players, my staff, the whole club and the supporters for two rewarding years.”

Desabre spent 18 months in command of Uganda, including guiding the Cranes at the 2019 Nations Cup. He has also managed club teams in the Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Egypt. Following the rescheduling of September’s 2023 Nations Cup qualifiers, DR Congo won’t play another competitive match until March, 2022
