The English Premier League will implement semi-automated offside technology for the first time in matches beginning April 12. This system was first introduced in English football during seven out of eight FA Cup fifth-round matches in March.
After conducting more testing in the Premier League, the technology has received approval for use in the league’s top tier.
Semi-automated offside technology aims to enhance the precision of tight offside decisions by automating parts of the process.
“Semi-automated offside technology automates key elements of the offside decision-making process to support the video assistant referee (VAR).
“It provides more efficient placement of the virtual offside line, using optical player tracking, and generates virtual graphics to ensure an enhanced in-stadium and broadcast experience for fans.” a Premier League statement said
Virtual offside lines and graphics will be utilised for viewers at home or in the stadium, along with optical player tracking. VAR officials will verify that the system has followed the correct procedure before notifying the referee, who then communicates the decision to the players.

This technology first appeared at elite levels during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and has also been used in the Champions League, Serie A, and La Liga.
Employing 30 cameras positioned around a stadium, the technology will assist in determining close offside calls and will help confirm or suggest alterations to the referee’s on-field decision.
The Premier League has collaborated with Professional Game Match Officials Limited and Genius Sports to advance this technology.
It will make its debut in the Premier League when Manchester City faces Crystal Palace in the early match on April 12. Other games that day include Arsenal’s home match against Brentford.
