After weeks of protests, President Macky Sall‘s government has declared that a presidential election will be held later this month.
Senegal’s administration announced on Wednesday that the delayed presidential election will be held on March 24.
On February 3, President Macky Sall announced the postponement of elections slated for February 25, causing significant outrage in a country that many observers regard as a stable democracy.
The Senegalese Constitutional Council pronounced Sall’s delay of the election null and illegal on Wednesday, saying that scheduling the vote until after his term expires on April 2 would be unconstitutional.
The electoral crisis erupted after officials’ failed attempt to postpone the poll until December.
“The President of the Republic informed the Council of Ministers of the setting of the date of the presidential election for Sunday, March 24, 2024,” said government spokesperson Abdou Karim Fofana in a statement issued on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, Sall also dissolved Senegal‘s government, replacing Prime Minister Amadou Ba with Interior Minister Sidiki Kaba. According to the presidency, the reorganisation will allow Ba to focus on his election campaign.
