Senegal Candidates Demand Election Within Six Weeks

Fifteen out of the twenty candidates sanctioned to participate in the postponed presidential elections in Senegal are urging for the new poll to be conducted by April 2nd, the scheduled end date of President Macky Sall’s term.

The collective of fifteen candidates is adamant that the electoral list must remain unchanged.

Among the signatories are prominent contenders such as Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who is currently detained on charges of incitement, and former Dakar mayor Khalifa Sall, unrelated to the incumbent president.

President Sall had initially sought to delay the elections by several months to resolve disputes over the eligibility of certain candidates. However, the nation’s highest court ruled the postponement unconstitutional, prompting Mr. Sall to announce that the vote would proceed “at the earliest opportunity.”
