Senegal Defeat Egypt to Win First AFCON Title

Senegal’s golden generation sealed their place in the annals of history on Sunday night as they won their first ever African Cup of Nations title after defeating Egypt in penalties.

Two-time losers in the final, Senegal were taken all the way by a resolute Egyptian team after Sadio Mane missed an early penalty. The Lions of Teranga threw all they had in their armoury against the Pharaohs but were taken to the spot where their fate was sealed.

Mane rose from the fringes of villainy to the centrepiece of heroism as he converted the final spot kick which confirmed Senegal’s new, albeit long-awaited status as the champions of Africa.

Egypt had goalkeeper Gabaski to thank for keeping their hopes alive till the death as he made a slew of fine saves to keep the Senegalese at bay. Senegal played under great control, hardly lost focus all game and kept thumping the Egyptian defence.

Some chances fell to the Egyptians late in the game with Chelsea goalkeeper and FIFA The best goalkeeper in the world, Edouard Mendy being called to action in a game that hardly saw him tested.

Egypt rallied till the end and defended in numbers as they frustrated a Senegalese onslaught, despite the West Africans’ dominance on the ball. The Egyptians however came short in the spot kicks as Senegal emerged worthy winners.

Cameroon attacker and skipper, Vincent Aboubakar was awarded with the Golden boot as he scored 8 times in the competition. Mendy was voted goalkeeper of the tournament while Sadio Mané won the Most Valuable Player award.
