Senegalese Opposition Factions Unite Ahead of Parliamentary Elections

The opposition leader Ousmane Sonko’s Yewwi Askan Wi coalition and former president Abdoulaye Wade’s Wallu Sénégal coalition have decided to join forces in order to win the next parliamentary elections.

Recall that in 2017, the coalition backed by president Macky Sall won 125 seats out of the 165.

The main Senegalese opposition parties reached an unusual agreement earlier this week after rounds of meetings and debates.

The goal is clear: the two major opposition coalitions want to avoid competing lists in order to enhance their chances of defeating a candidate from the ruling party.

To defeat President Macky Sall’s APR party, the opposition parties will field candidates at the departmental level.

According to reports, the candidate who won the previous municipal elections will be at the top of the list.

On July 31st, millions of voters, including those registered abroad, will go to the polls in the electoral districts, which encompass the 46 Senegalese departments.

President Macky Sall’s alliance won the recent parliamentary elections in August 2017, filling 125 of the 165 seats in the Senegalese National Assembly.
