Liverpool striker Sadio Mane has been shortlisted for the 2020 Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Player of the Year award.
The Senegal international scored 18 goals in 35 matches to help Liverpool lift their first premier league title in 30 years.
Mane, 28, is the reigning African Footballer of the Year, and is included on the shortlist alongside fellow Liverpool teammates in last year’s winner Virgil van Dijk, captain Jordan Henderson, and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold who is also nominated for the young player award along with two players of African descent – Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham and Busayo Saka of Arsenal.
Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez, during his time at Leicester City in 2016 and Egypt’s Mohammed Salah in 2018 – another teammate with Mane at Liverpool – are the only African players to have won the PFA award.
Liverpool’s premier league rivals Manchester City have two players on the shortlist – England’s Raheem Sterling and Belgian midfielder Kevin de Bruyne.
The winners of this year’s PFA award will be announced on Tuesday.
