Tunisia’s Islamist Ennahda party announced on Tuesday that its top figure, Noureddine Bhairi, had been released from house arrest.

According to the interior ministry, Bhairi was placed under house arrest due to the illegal submission of passports and nationality documents, as well as a severe suspicion of terrorism.

President Kais Saied disbanded Parliament and assumed governing powers in July, in a move that Ennahda and other parties claimed was a coup. Bhairi was the party’s first senior figure imprisoned since then.

Several major politicians and business leaders have been prosecuted since Saied’s intervention in July, often for cases of corruption or slander.

Some of the arrests, as well as the use of military courts to hear such cases, have been questioned by human rights organisations.

However, there has been no major arrest campaign of Saied opponents or other dissidents.
